El 11.11.11 Citoplasmas estuvo dentro del vientre de la bestia.
La bestia en cuestión fue la producción de Frankenweenie, último largometraje animado dirigido por Tim Burton, en los estudios 3 Mills (Londres). César Díaz nos guió en esta visita alucinante por los vericuetos de la producción.
En la secretaria de entrada firmamos un papel en el que nos comprometíamos a no decir ni mu sobre lo que vieramos, y sobre todo, a no tomar fotos. Después de las firmas empezó la fiesta: César nos fue conduciendo por todos los departamentos comenzando por el de construcción de muñecos. Allí, el mismísmo Andy Gent nos explicó, con pelos y señales, cada una de las partes del proceso. También estuvimos comentando con él las Kinetic, un gozada.
Después husmeamos en los sets, muchos y muy complejos, con decorados idénticos a diferentes escalas. Fisgoneamos a los animadores mientras trabajaban, al asistente de dirección de foto mientras preparaba las cámaras para el “next shot”, a los maquetistas armados con pistolas de silicona … Solo nos faltó el departamento de producción, que debe ser top secret, y el de post-producción. Pero de esto nos dimos cuenta dias más tarde, cuando nos recuperamos de la emoción. Todavía estamos digiriendo toda la información y los detalles acumulados durante la visita.
Y para compensar la falta de información concreta, aquí os dejo un estupendo mini-documental de HeyUGuys (reportaje escrito y fotos aquí), equivalente a todo lo que vimos. Aunque no habla de Frankenweenie sino de otro suculento largometraje de stop motion: The Pirates, de Aardman.

CITOPLASMAS: Inside of the Beast!
The beast we are talking about is the last Tim Burton’s animated feature film, “Frankenweenie” production in 3 Mills studios in London. Our good friend César Díaz, who worked there as an animator, invited us inside into a fabulous visit to know the whole details of this production.
At the secretary’s office, we signed a legal certificate where we agreed to keep all the production secrets and above all, not to take pictures. But then began the feast. César led us for all the departments, beginning in the puppets construction section. There, Andy Gent in person, Head of Animation, explained us the whole process in great detail. We also had the opportunity to show him our Kinetic armatures, what a bliss!
Afterwards we browsed around the sets, many and very complex, with some of them identical but at different scales. We also nosed around the animators while they were animating, the cinematography director while setting the cameras for the next shot, and the set builders walking around with silicone guns… The only departments we couldn’t visit were the production and postproduction ones, we guess they must be really top-secret. We noticed this missed departments after a few days, when we start recovering from all the excitement and information, we are still assimilating in such a short visit (just one day there).

Wooow!!! Visiting a big production like Frankenweenie should be really exciting!! Sadly, Brazil is a little bit far from Europe, so I can’t try to do the same…
